The Henna Helper

The Henna Helper

  • Ages: 5-8
  • AWARD WINNING:

Deep in Tel Aviv’s Yemenite Quarter, the small houses on Yom Tov Street buzz with activity. The entire neighborhood is preparing for Yael’s Hagbi’s pre-wedding Henna ceremony. Everyone is excited, except Gali, Yael’s young cousin.

Gali, Yael's youngest cousin, is confused. Why isn’t her savta – grandmother --  focusing on making her flower girl dress for the wedding? Why is savta more involved in making head coverings and beads for the Henna ceremony? Why does Yael want to hold this silly, old-fashioned custom? After all, they don’t live in Yemen. They live in modern Israel!

Wise Savta asks Gali to help her. As Gali assists in all of the preparations and participates in the ceremony itself, she sees how beautiful and important it is to keep true to her culture.
